A Professional Profile Photo — One Photo, Every Platform
A professional profile photo: LinkedIn, WhatsApp Business, website and CV, which photo works in a tiny circle, and why a good selfie is still not enough.
Take a moment to count: in how many places does your photo appear today? LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams, your email signature, the company website, maybe an old article. In every one of those places someone is looking — and deciding something about you. Before you have said a word.
And here is the thing: most people have uploaded different photos there, from different periods, in different qualities. One from a wedding, one a selfie from the car, one cropped out of a group photo. One precise, professional profile photo solves the whole list — if you know what each platform demands.
The small circle changes the rules
The most common mistake: choosing a photo by how it looks large. But on WhatsApp, on Zoom and in LinkedIn search, your photo is a circle less than a centimetre across.
At that size only three things survive: a face that fills the frame, a clear expression, and contrast with the background. A full-body photo, a photo with scenery behind, a photo that is too dark — all of them turn into a grey smudge. That is why a professional shoot always produces a close-crop version as well, built precisely for the circle.
What each platform really demands
LinkedIn — chest up, an open expression, a clean background. This is the platform where the photo works hardest: recruiters and clients look at it before every decision. I wrote a separate, full guide about it.
WhatsApp Business — the closest crop. Clients see that circle dozens of times a day; a pleasant, clear expression is worth more here than any sophisticated composition.
Zoom and Teams — the photo appears when the camera is off, usually on a dark background. A bright, close version keeps your presence in the meeting even without video.
The company website and the email signature — here there is room to breathe: a wider composition, body language is possible. It matters that all the team members are photographed in the same style — that is exactly what a concentrated shoot day is built on.
A CV — has rules of its own, I have gathered them here.
The same photograph, different crops — that is the secret
People think they need a different photo for each place. The opposite is true: the same photograph on every platform builds recognition — whoever saw you on LinkedIn recognises you on WhatsApp. What changes is the crop: close for the small circles, wide for the website.
That is why from one photo session you should come away with a complete set: a main photo plus crop versions for each platform, adapted in advance. That is part of the work, not an add-on.
Why not a selfie, for the millionth time
Because a selfie — even a good one — carries three built-in problems: the close lens distorts the proportions (the nose grows, the ears disappear), the lighting is whatever was in the room, and there is nobody to tell you that your chin is too high. In a small circle, the difference between a selfie and a professional photograph is the difference between "someone" and "this person looks serious".
And if you are considering solving it with AI — I wrote about why that works against you.
In summary
Your profile photo is the business card that works 24 hours a day, in ten places at once. One professional session — in the studio or in the mobile studio that comes to you — produces all the versions for all the platforms. The prices and packages are here.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a LinkedIn profile photo and a photo for WhatsApp Business?
- The size and the context. On LinkedIn the photo is viewed alongside professional text and there is room for a chest-up composition; on WhatsApp it is a tiny circle — the face needs to fill the frame, and a clear expression matters more than any other detail. From one session a version adapted to each platform is produced.
- Can the same photo be used on every platform?
- The same photograph — yes, and it is even desirable for consistent recognition. But in a different crop: closer for WhatsApp and Zoom, wider for the website and LinkedIn. Consistency builds recognition; the adapted crop keeps it legible.
- Why is a good selfie not enough for a professional profile photo?
- Because of three things a selfie does not have: a suitable lens (in a selfie the nose is distorted by the closeness of the lens), built lighting, and direction on expression. The difference shows immediately — especially in a small circle where the expression is everything.
- How often should a profile photo be renewed?
- When the people who meet you no longer recognise the photo — usually every two to three years, or after a noticeable change in appearance. An out-of-date photo does quiet damage: it creates a gap at the first meeting.
- Which is better — a light or a dark background for a profile photo?
- Whatever contrasts with the environment in which the photo will appear. On LinkedIn and WhatsApp the interface is light — a dark or coloured background makes you stand out. More important than that: a clean background, with no noise competing with the face.
