The Fight Against the Defacement of Women's Images in Public Space

Nashim Lev: a call to fight the exclusion of women.

In recent times we have been witnessing a troubling escalation in the phenomenon of excluding women from Israel's urban spaces. Extremists deface images of women in the public sphere — and not provocative images, but any depiction of a woman, from a portrait to an animation. For those who deface them, every woman, girl or child is seen as an object that might cause them to stumble in immodesty. That is, a woman is seen first of all as a sexual object, and only afterward as a mother, sister, wife, daughter and so on.

Examples of the defacement of women's images in advertising and the public space.

In response to this phenomenon, the “Nashim Lev” project was created. The project documents leading women in classic lighting, with an emphasis on the unique feminine expression, and will be presented in a major exhibition and a wide campaign ahead of the coming International Women's Day. The project is non-commercial: all the photography is done on a volunteer basis, and all proceeds go directly to the cause.

The portraits in the project were photographed with the Docu-Studio method — a documentary expression drawn out through conversation and trust.
