Headshots after 50: why experience looks good on camera, retouching without "de-aging", what to wear, and light that works with lines, not against them.
There is a moment that repeats itself in the studio. A man of 55, 60, sometimes 70, sits down in front of the camera after years without a serious photograph — "my last photo is from my son's wedding" — and at the end of the session looks at the screen and says: "Wow. Is that really me?"
Yes. It is you. That is what experience looks like when it is photographed properly.
A headshot after 50 is not "despite the age". It works precisely because of the age — provided you stop fighting it.
Your face is your CV
At 30 a headshot needs to convince people that you are serious. At 55 it does not need to convince — it only needs not to get in the way of the facts: decades of experience, roles, people you have managed, crises you have come through.
The lines of the face are not a flaw to hide. They are exactly what makes the client, the board or the search committee feel that the person in front of them has already been there. The camera knows how to tell that — if you let it.
Why "de-aging" in Photoshop is the worst mistake
I see it a lot: profile photos that have been aggressively smoothed — doll skin, real age minus a decade. The problem is not aesthetic, it is a business problem: when people meet you in person, the gap speaks. And the first thing it says is: this man is not comfortable with himself.
Professional retouching does the opposite. It removes what is momentary — shine on the skin, a stray shadow, redness after shaving — and leaves what is permanent: you. The result looks like you on a good day, not like someone else.
Light that works with the face, not against it
This is the professional part most people are not aware of: the very same face will look hard and furrowed in one light — and authoritative and full of life in another.
Hard light from the side deepens every line. Large, soft light, at the right angle, does something else entirely: it keeps the lines of character and makes the tiredness disappear. Grey hair, by the way, also photographs beautifully — it takes on a silver sheen that looks excellent against a dark background. What to wear — the important-meeting rule
The same principle as always, only more important: dress as you would for the day you meet the most important person in your current career. A garment that fits excellently — a precise cut does more for the photo than any retouching. Solid colours, no prints. And bring two or three sets; we choose together in the studio.

The stage after 50 is exactly the stage at which the photo starts working hard: an appointment to a board, a move into independent consulting, a private practice, lectures, a first book, and even — a LinkedIn profile that suddenly everyone is looking at.
